Read Our Lips

Read Our Lips is an online learning program created and managed by the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association - Newfoundland and Labrador (CHHA-NL).

In 2018, the Association decided to create an opportunity to bring lip reading classes to EVERYONE, no matter where you live in the world. This class is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about lip (speech) reading and wants to improve their skills in this area. We are dedicated to supporting those with hearing loss, and their families, by improving quality of life through communication skills.

What is Lipreading?

Lipreading is an empowering skill used by many people to improve their communication skills. Despite a common misconception, almost everyone can benefit from learning to lipread.

For people with hearing loss - lipreading is a tool that can help you pick up on words that your hearing technology or available hearing may have missed.

For people without hearing loss - lipreading can help you communicate better in challenging listening environments and improve your overall communication skills.

Lipreading helps people understand more speech by watching for and identifying mouth movements that are associated with speech.

Being able to see speech helps people communicate better, especially in challenging listening environments like when there is background noise.

Target Audience

The Read Our Lips user is an adult over the age of 50 with some form of diagnosed hearing loss who feel left out and isolated from conversations and social events because they are struggling to hear and follow in background noise.
