Read Our Lips is an online learning program created by the experienced lipreading instructors of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association – Newfoundland and Labrador (CHHA-NL).

The program covers the eight most common lip movements through eight interactive lessons.

The self-paced video lessons allow you to check your progress, quiz yourself at every step, and practice as much as you need!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long will it take me to complete this course, and can I preview it before buying?

    This is a self-paced course. You can take as much time as you need, but on average it takes about an hour per lesson (8 lessons in total).

    Parts of the first lesson are available for a free preview. To access it, you must create a new account under "Sign in" - "Create a new account" - (you are not required to give your credit card information for this) and then select "My course" once you are logged into your account.

    You will have access to your account for six months after purchase. This course is self-paced, with no deadlines on the quizzes, but after six months it expires and you will need to renew your purchase.

  • What technology do I need?

    This course is designed to be very easy to use so all you need to complete it is a tablet/smartphone, a laptop or a desktop computer with access to a high-speed internet connection.

    Please note that this course does not work well with Internet Explorer. Please use one of the following internet browsers:

    Desktop: Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Edge

    Mobile: iOS Safari: 11 and up, Chrome, Samsung Internet

    If you are having trouble, make sure that your internet browser is up to date.

  • I've done some lipreading before, will the course still benefit me?

    This course is perfect for absolute beginners, but it’s also great for people with some lipreading experience who are looking to either refresh or add to their skills.

    We believe that you can’t practice lipreading too much! The more work you put into lipreading, the easier it becomes. Whether or not you have experience, you will learn new tips and tricks, as well as gain a lot of practice.

  • What can I do if I have more questions about this program?

  • Who do I contact if I forget my password, or need technical assistance?

    If you forgot your password, it's not a problem! Visit the login page, hit the “I forgot my password” button, and you will receive a "Reset password" link in your email.

    If you need technical assistance, please make sure that the issue is not with your internet browser (it may need to be updated). If you still need help, you can contact CHHA-NL by email: [email protected].

  • How will I be graded and how do I get my certificate?

    At the end of each lesson you will complete a quiz that has 5-7 lipreading practice words. You need to get at least 80% on each quiz to move on to the next lesson. Once you have completed the multiple-choice questions, you will see your mark for each lesson.

    Your certificate will be accessible once you complete the course. You will be given two options: to download it or email it to yourself for printing.

  • What if I change my mind and want to drop the class?

    You may decide to not complete this course, but we do not offer refunds after the course sign-up.
